The Opening Scenes of Harry Potter and the Philosophers...

The Opening Scenes of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring In recent years the fantasy genre has undergone a huge revival. Whereas it was once reserved for childrens books of fairy tales, fantasy in both literature and film alike is increasingly becoming a more mainstream genre, enjoyed by people of all kinds. ==================================================================== Fantasy films are probably the most frequently stereotyped genre of all. They tend to involve things such as Dark Lords, magicians, quests and otherworldly creatures. But only when all these are believably portrayed are they interesting films. Fantasy films that†¦show more content†¦Fantasy films have the element of surprise- the viewer can never predict exactly what is going to happen next. Although The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring uses this traditional stereotype (and dont forget, it was the tale that set the stereotypes!) Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone begins in a nice row of thoroughly modern little terraced houses with neat little lawns and cars in every driveway. The scene is set during the night and everything is very quiet. The street lights provide a misty feel to the place- until an old man (whom we have just watched walking down the road) rather dramatically puts most of them out using a small device not entirely unlike an ornately car ved lighter, thus providing an ethereal glow for the ensuing conversation. The most immediate questions that spring to mind are What is that Put-Outer? Why on earth would the man want to put the street lamps out? and What exactly is this eccentric-looking old man doing in a nice, normal place like this Privet Drive anyway? This last question was definitely intended by the producers of the film, as throughout the opening scene the film makes comparisons between the typical objects and behaviour expected, and those shown in this scene. The opening to The Fellowship of the Ring does not, strictly speaking, actually have a setting. It is comprised mostly of

This award represents the housing industrys highest recognition for achievements in the area of quality management and operational excellence in the residential construction industry (nahbrc. com). The NHQ Award is modeled after the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, which was established in 1987, by Congress to raise awareness of quality management and recognize U. S. companies that have implemented successful quality-management systems (Baldrige. com). The Award promotes awareness of performance excellence as an increasingly important element in competitiveness and information sharing of successful performance strategies and the benefits derived from using these strategies (Wikipedia). Recipients are selected based on achievement and improvement in seven areas, known as the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence, which the NHQA has Performance Excellence which has eight categories upon which entrants are Judged. The National Housing Quality Award (NHQA) is open to all US homebuilders, remodelers and trade contractors and is administered by the NAHBRC in conjunction with Reed Business Information, publishers of Professional Builder Magazine. NHQ Award applications are reviewed by a panel of Judges who are experts in both the housing industry and quality management, many of them being past NHQ awards winners. These Judges then evaluate the importance of quality in the companys construction, strategic planning, leadership and performance management, trade elationships, customer satisfaction, human resources and business results, which are the NHQA Criteria for Performance Excellence (nahbrc . com). The NHQ Award is presented annually at the Professional Builders Benchmark Conference. Award winners go on to be featured in Professional Builder Magazine articles that highlight the quality management practices as models for the housing industry. The award title is held for one year. AWARD CRITERIA Patterned after the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the NHQ Award was designed to recognize residential construction companies for excellence in quality chievement and promote awareness of customer focused quality as an increasingly vital element of competitiveness and productivity for building professionals. The NHQA has two divisions with one open to all US companies that build or remodel residential homes using light construction methods. The other is open to all independent trade contractors that provide construction services to builders or remodeling companies. The NHQA consists of a set of eight criteria as outlined in their Criteria for Performance Excellence: Category I Description I Points I Leadership I How does the company’s senior leaders, guide the organization towards common purposed based on shared values and priorities? | 10 | Strategic Quality Planning I How does the organization create and implement a strategic plan to achieve a vision for the future, enhance their competitive position and improve overall performance? | 10 | Performance Management I How are the companys business processes developed, managed, measured and improved to achieve performance excellence? 10 | Customer Satisfaction I How does the company manage the design and delivery of products and services that promise a high level of customer satisfaction? | 10 | Human Resources I How does the organizations mployee selection and development practices, as well as staff performance management, well being, motivation, satisfaction and compensation contribute to the growth of the organization? | 10 | Construction Quality I What methods does the company use to drive quality in the home construction process and ensure high performing, trouble free products and services? 10 | Supplier Partnerships Examines how the organization designs, manages and improves processes for implementation to deliver customer value and reach organizational success | 10 Business Results I What are the tangible measurements of the business benefits esulting from the organizations high performance practices in the financial, operational, customer satisfaction and product and service quality areas? | 30 | Despite the fact that the NHQA award is modeled after the MBNQA award there are focuses on quality assurance approaches that ensure high performing, trouble free products and services. In addition the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award is awarded to a sole winner whereas the National Housing Quality Award has several award categories. The NHQA has three recognition levels: honorable mention, silver and gold. Gold is awarded to those that have attained a national benchmark level within ach area of evaluation; they have mature, fully integrated quality management principles and consistently demonstrate high level sustained results. Silver is awarded to those that are industry leaders in most evaluation areas; they have many refined business practices, key measures for continual improvement and good business results. Honorable mention is awarded in special circumstances for those that demonstrate an understanding of quality principles and show a sound, fact based improvement process. Key measures are in place and good business results are achieved in most areas (Denis 2009). To be considered for the NHQ Award applicants must complete a rigorous application process which includes a 15 page application which is considered an important step in every applicant’s road to quality. This is so as participants benefit from the insightful process of preparing the application, which is a long and grueling process, which takes hundreds of man- hours to complete. Judges evaluate each applicant to determine to what extent the entrant embraced a customer focus and systematically embraced it within their business practices. Those that passed the initial selection were scheduled for a site isit. On the site visit, each finalist spent at a minimum a day with a team of Judges. At the end of the visit, the Judges had a clear understanding of the company culture, management practices and the quality results. The final award is given to the organization that is deemed befitting on the overall Judge’s findings. BENEFITS OF THE AWARD The NHQ Award is more than recognition of quality achievement. It sets a benchmark to strive for and a model for improvement. By preparing an NHQA application organizations get an opportunity to assess their business from a Total Quality perspective. This rigorous process allows organizations to really take a look at their processes and make significant improvements in order to be competitive. The organizations that submit an NHQA application receive detailed feedback on strengths and opportunities for improvement from the expert Judging panel. According to Tom Gillespie, President Kennedy Community Development, a multi-year applicant and 1997 NHQ Award winner, â€Å"no other programs has provided our company with more rewards, both financial and operational, than the NHQ application process provides† (Toolbase. org). This shows the depth of the application rocess and the benefits that can be yielded from its undertaking. Tom Gillespie is not the only one that praises the benefit of the NHQ way. David Simon, president of operations at Veridian Homes, a 2005 Silver award winner, says that, â€Å"the in-depth review of our application and the detailed site visits provide valuable feedback not only for our strategic planning but also for driving quality improvement throughout the organizations† (Builderonline, 2005). The benefits of the NHQ award are far reaching, applicants benefit Just by undertaking the award application process and y implementing changes based on the feedback that they are provided by the gross profit margins which can be significant. Mercedes Homes, a 1996 NHQ Award winner used the NHQ criteria as a model to â€Å"tune-up† their management practices. As a result of this improvement process they had higher profits in 1996 than the previous five years combined! Scott Buescher, V. P Operations, COO, attributes reports that using the NHQ model was a major factor in their success (Toobase. org, NHQ Agenda). The bottom line is that there are really no losers with the NHQ award as the enefits far outweigh the time and effort that are invested into the application process. According to Paul Deffenbaugh, editorial director of Professional Builder, as a result of going through the process, NHQ Award winners, â€Å"significantly improve the performance of their companies, making them more consistent and more reliable. Home buyers have found these companies execute the best quality homes and deliver the highest quality satisfaction† (National Building News, 2007). PAST WINNERS Since the inception of the NHQA in 1993 through 2009, 67 builders have received recognition, of which eight builders have earned multiple awards. These organizations range in size from small family owned to large national builders, building a variety of homes in a wide price range. In addition six remodelers and five trade partners have been awarded recognition (Leonard, 2009). NHQ Award winners represent the best of the best in the home building industry. In 1993 Town and Country Homes was named the first National Housing Quality Award winner. This win was attributed to customer satisfaction and sales as the leading Chicago area home builder (Hauser, 1993). Since then many other organizations have gone on to win what is considered the hardest award to win in home building. In 2009, Tempe, Arizona based builder, T. W Lewis become the sole recipient of the 2009 NHQ Gold Award, having won in 1998 the NHQ Silver Award. â€Å"This award is a significant accomplishment in the homebuilding industry and one that our company and associates are very honored to received,† said T. W Lewis president and COO Kevin Egan. â€Å"The NHQ Award reaffirms the path we have chosen as a company-a path that is focused on productive quality, customer satisfaction and operational excellence† (East Valley Living, 2009). In 2002 only one U. S builder was recognized as a Gold Award winner and that was History Maker Homes of Forth Worth, Texas. History maker attributed their success to the relationships that they have been able to foster. Nelson Mitchell, president of history maker a family owned company said, â€Å"we strive for valued relationships with our customers and with each of our team members, as well. Our company works diligently to maintain the family culture we have enjoyed for many decades† (History Maker Homes, 2002). 002 was a historic year for the NHQ Awards as it was the first year since its inception in 1993 that Silver Awards were gained by two trade contractors as the award was expanded to include ot only builders, but remodelers and trade contractors as well. The inaugural winners in the contractor category were All-tech, Inc. of Monroe, N. J and Tappe Construction of Eagan, Minn. When the NHQ Awards were introduced almost two decades ago, many builders had a hard time figu ring out how quality management could help their companies. The longevity of the Awards and the achievements of the winning builders have set this award as the most prestigious award in the industry. Housing Quality Award examines the builder’s business and quality management practices. We are concerned with the builder’s ability to deliver a quality product onsistently, have satisfied home buyers, and achieve high productivity,† says Liza Bowles, President of the NAHB Research Center, (Professional Builder, 1997). Following is a list of other past winners of The NHQ Awards. For the home building industry the epitome of quality is seen in the National Housing Quality Award, an award modeled after the infamous Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and represents the highest recognition to be gained in the housing industry. The NHQA Criteria for Performance Excellence has been an important tool for hundreds of home builders and trade contractors to assess and improve performance on critical business success factors which has enabled them to grow as n organization. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GigE_Vision http://www.builderonline.com/design/awards/the-winning-homes-from-the-2016-gold-nugget-awards_o Home iframe class="wp-embedded-content" sandbox="allow-scripts" security="restricted" style="position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);" src="https://www.nbnnews.com.au/embed/#?secret=J2tcjRoPQg" data-secret="J2tcjRoPQg" width="500" height="282" title="#8220;Home#8221; #8212; NBN News" frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" scrolling="no"/iframe http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/23/technology/internet/23worm.html http://www.historymaker.com/dfw/aubrey/arrowbrooke-50s/ http://www.nbnnews.com.au/tag/t4/ https://www.nahb.org/en/research/safety/~/media/EC307DD0CB534384A60E0E089E7C5831.ashx https://uxplanet.org/best-practices-for-microinteractions-9456211aeed0 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:HighBeam https://www.tceq.texas.gov/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAHBGreen https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malcolm_Baldrige_National_Quality_Award How to cite National Home Builders Quality Award, Papers

Services It Offers More Thousand Clients †Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: Discuss About The Services It Offers More Thanseven Thousand Clients? Answer: Introduction Globalization and technological advancement has seen businesses look for the beststrategies to ensure that they are competitive within the market. In every entity, organizational changes become at some point pertinent and necessaryfor the continuity andgrowth of the organization; developing the best strategies and organizational behaviorpractices is critical for ensuring that there is sustainability and growth within the entity. Global competition, technology changes, consumer behavior and needs, political climates, emerging markets, economic factors and much more are all elements of importance that leadto develop and apply new strategies and are determinant in the adaptation of the organization. Different business analysis tools are available and can be used to asses an organizationsuch as PESTLE, SWOT, Porters five force, balanced scorecard, The McKinsey 7-S Framework andmany more. Some of these tools emphasize on the internal environment of the organization, some other on theexternal environment and some cover both environments. In my assessment I will be conducting all SWOT, PESTLE, Porter 5 and 7-S analysis to analyze the company and market and the different aspects that are critical in ensuring that XYZ is sustainable in the market,I will also accordingly establish a balanced scorecard to outline the main elements and make a proper assessment and model of change. Company Background and Information XYZ is a Lebanese local company that has been involved in the development and implementing of ERP systems solutions in the last 30years. The company implements integrated management solutions of core business processes and mediated software and technology for clients in a dynamic growing market. The companys major line of ERP business solutions cover financials, logistics, retail, manufacturing, construction, project management, procurement, job costing, media booking and creative production solution. These are the main services that the company offers and have been selected among a large pool of its ERP services. The company has its headquarters located in Lebanon, but it has also set up two satellite offices in Dubai and Saudi Arabia. The offices support its vast network of clients and services across the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar,Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia Morocco, KSA and Lebanon clients. The company has more than 7000 customers spread across the Middle East and North Africa with huge potential of the markets only opening up for more opportunities and customers in the region. XYZ looks to establish itself as a major brand and increase its market share in the region. XYZ is a medium size, family owned, companythat operates within the Middle-East and North African markets. XYZ has more than 80 dedicated consultants that are all specialized in systems design and solution integration that are important in developing the company. (Organizational Chart Appendix a) The huge potential in the region has however, started attracting medium size competitors from the West as well as the East, along with the existing major big players (SAP/Oracle/Microsoft Dynamics). This is increasingly leading to stiff competition in the markets; It is therefore, critical to ensure that the company develops the best strategic actions and methods to position itself in the market and develop better sustainable methods of change. As the company looks to develop and grow, it is imperative to ensure that the proper systems have been developed. An analysis of internal and external factors determining growth and development of the company is therefore critical. XYZ looks to establish itself as a major brand and increase its market share in the region. The SWOT analysis is a tool used for planning services, that helps build the strategy of the organization and allows to analyse its actual strengths and weaknesses and define the threats and opportunities that it may faces whether internally or externally. Strengths Full fledge ERP solutions adaptable to many lines of industries. Cost effective and competitive line of prices. Flexibility and customization of the services provided. Competent and cohesive workforce that understands the underlying goals and objectives of the company. The entity has seventy members within its workforce that are highly productive. The company also has a strong market share in the region and prides itself in having more than 7000 clients in the region. The company can be considered as a major player in the Lebanese market. High profit in the Lebanese market Weaknesses Low brand awareness in the regional market. XYZ ERP solutions are Client Server basedonly whereas competition has alsoWeb based and orCloud basedERP solution, which means less flexibility and additional IT costs for customers. Less competitive product if considering the new trend in technology. Lack of diversification of the different services that are offered under the ERP system. Weakness of the Dubai and KSA branch in terms of sustainability and profit. Lack of strong presence in all the countries where the company has clients across the Middle East. The company does not have offices or people spread through the different countries in the larger region. Lack of motivation and /or orientation of a big number of staff. Autocratic leadership system where most, if not all, decisions lies in the hands of the CEO. Family business following a one-man leadership point of view. No unity in command and direction. Employees are receiving orders at the same time from the CEO and the head of departments. Overloaded operational capacity leading to lower efficiency. Lack of financial resources that is slowing the recruitment process for acquiring new talents and development of new technologies. Opportunities The huge potential in the region with growing businesses and entities needing the ERP services offered by XYZ. Widening the number of ERP services offered in the market thereby increasing the companys portfolio. Add web or cloud based technology which will allow growing business with the actual clients and pitching for new ones. Target more dynamically and cover more countries in the MENA region. XYZ ERP solutions are complant and tested with the VAT tax that will be implemented in the GCC countries as of January 2018. Threats Increase in the level of competition in the region. Dynamic changes in technology in the market. The clients employeesand managers are resistant to development and change in their ERPsystems therefore representing barriers for XYZ new business and sales. Critical economic situation in the MENA region due to the drop of oil and gas prices. Critical political situations in all MENA countries; namely Qatar and GCC being in conflict, Syria and IRAK Analysis of SWOT Analysis The SWOT analysis reveals that XYZ offers a strong and competitive service that is flexible and can be customized upon customers needs. The company is in a great position within the Lebanese market especially due to its market share and brand. Branding and market share are important facets in every market since these aspects ensure that the company can be competitive against any other brand names from abroad. The positioning of the company in the Gulf regionhowever is weak. The company needs to take advantage of the opportunities available in the market especially through increasing its services portfolio and reaching out to more potential clients throughout the MENA region. The numbers of services that are offered by the company also lack the proper level of diversification in the market and new technologies are to be considered. Motivation of employees and engaging the members of the team is a critical aspect that the company needs to address sincethe company is mainly driven by these employees who offer the services that are critical to the entity. Increasing the number of qualified and committed employees within the different regions is as well critical. Also the leadership style needs to be addressed and reviewed. The threat of changes in technology in ERP systems has also been identified as a major threat to the company. Therefore, developing proper and dynamic technologies while updating the individual systems is fundamental for gaining market advantage PESTLE Analysis The PESTEL model is used to analyse and identify the external macro environment thatmight affect the organization. The PESTEL model includes various factors in the externalenvironment: The Political, Ecological, Socio-Cultural, Technological, marketing and Legal fields. It studies every element and defines the potential impact of each of them on the organization. Being aware of these factors and elements allows the company to face any changes, stay on top of the competition and be ready to react quickly. It can also serve as ? checklist to verify that the SWOT analysishas not forgotten any important factor Political XYZ has already navigated through most of the political hurdles that are present in the Middle-East and North African countries. The company is a Middle East based entity meaning that it is a homegrown entity within the region and cannot be curtailed by most of the bureaucratic government and political models that are present in the region. The political atmosphere in theregion is somewhat stabilized in some of the countries like Lebanon, KSA, Egypt, and UAE but still unstable in IRAQ, Syria and QATAR. However, as opposed to companies from other regions and new entrants in the market, XYZ may deem the political atmosphere and indicators as positively impacting the market and industry to its advantage. While concentrating for the time being on the stable markets, the other MENA countries will represent huge emerging markets when the political situation stabilize and reconstruction time comes. Economic The economy of the Middle East is one of the first growing economies in the world with the UAE reporting increased growth since the turn of the 21st century. The region is rich in oil making it one of the most productive regions and bar the political conditions that curtail growth it has a vibrant economy (Minefield, 2012). However, the drop in oil and gas prices and some critical political issues in the region have slowed down the growth index. XYZ needs to take advantage of the general economic growth to tap into more markets and expand its service portfolio (Minefield, 2012). The region is placed perfectly towards being a strong economic hub. The company needs to capitalize on the changing political atmosphere and expand to other countries within the region. The opening up of the markets will give, on the longer run, impetus to the company to engage in other entities all over the world and look to expand globally and not only regionally. The social factors are also favorable for XYZ Company with the employees mostly coming from the region. However, to ensure that there is diversity and tap into the growing market of other markets from abroad, the company needs to integrate and engage in diversity models especially in the workforce (Robbins et al, 2010). Technological The technological aspects of XYZ are the most important attributes of the entity. ERP systems are run through developing and running the most efficient models that are meant to widen the business and create a stronger and more potent system (Ludwig and Frazier, 2012). Since the company engages in different technological processes, it is therefore fundamental to integrate the proper technology in its systems and services. The dynamism of technology combined with the high level of competition across the industries, offers a major challenge to XYZ Company and is a major precept towards creating a better and more structured model (Ludwig and Frazier, 2012). The business is within the legal structures that have been set across the region. However, the company needs to keep up to date with the legal models and issues that may arise from different systems and approach that are critical for change within the company. Porters Five Forces The Porters Five Forces are important in decision making and working out a proper model towards changing and developing the best organizational methods. The Company is facing a threat of new entry from companies looking to enter the market especially from the West. Technological companies are looking to enter the market and start selling similar and newer ERP services to the clients or the region as a whole (Ludwig and Frazier, 2012). It is one of the major threats that the company can be facing and the entity needs to be ready to face this threat. The buyers have considerable bargaining power that is gained from the fact that the services offered by the entity are tailored for individual entities. The entities have the sole power to engage the company and elicit their services through the market with their clients not needing their sole service in the market (Ludwig and The supplier power does not represent a challenge to the company. The high level of competition among the suppliers means that the entity has the freedom to engage the services of different companies/individuals and as a result the supplier bargaining power is not a major challenge to the entity.s The threat of substitutes represents a challenge to the growth and sustainability of the entity. ERP systems can be substituted to other companies and the competition is increasing within the region which means that the company could be facing major problems. Competitive Rivalry The level of competition within the market is a major problem to the company with increasing brands entering the market. Although the brand of XYZ as well as the market share of the company is in its favor, the company still faces major challenges from new brands entering the market. The level of competition has increased exponentially as newer brands and models have been introduced in the market. It is important for the company to ensure that it reinvents itself and develops a dynamic model towards growth within the region. The sevens model is a very useful framework that was developed to assess and analyze changes in the internal models that are used within the organization. The McKinseys 7s framework incorporates skills, strategy, style, staff, systems, structure and the shared values (later becoming superordinate goals) implemented within the entity. These are the fundamental attributes that the management needs to assess and monitor in every organization. In an entity, it is critical to improve performance as well as align the department goals to the larger organization. It is also helpful in taking strategic action to proactively deal with different market conditions that are present in the market. The assessment of McKinseys 7s reveals the below regarding XYZ: Strategy: Lackofa clear definedstrategy spread amongst the company. Inexistence of long term goals. Immediate Profit and market growth are the main targets without the existence of a clear path to achieve them. Growth and expansion plans are not defined. Structure: Headquarters are based in Beirut.A major division is established in Dubai and a business unit /representative office is set in KSA. Many resources are shared between the different offices. Centralized authority and no autonomy for the different offices. Lack of delegation and responsibility at head of departments level and no decision making power. Nonexistence of Marketing and strategic planning departments. No sales force; the project managers being the direct contact with the clients. Systems: Lack of accountability and measurement throughout the different levels of the organization. No proper reporting systems. Existence of Productivity measuring tool. Good financial control system. Lack of synergy and coordination between departments. Overlap and Duplication of functions in some departments. Style Centralized control where most of the decisions are taken mostly by the CEO. Autocratic leadership style. Execution role only for the heads of departments. Individually competitive environment whereas team efforts are needed. Staff Overloaded and unmotivated staff working sometimes under incoherent orders. Qualified employees who fulfill the requirements of their job descriptions. The company is however understaffed especially in terms of program developers which can develop the web based ERP services. Family style business environment which is enjoyable but not translated into concrete motivational factors and benefits. Skills Qualified staffwith the required skills. Lack of training mainly for the developers of ERP services for the web. Shared values Inexistence of company purpose. Profit-driven company with no higher objective. Family business; no identification of internal staff needs and the human factor. SWOT analysis As per the SWOT analysis that has been conducted, it can be critically analyzed that as the company is already in a good position due to the higher authorities can make the market share as well as the brand image of the company. However, certain changes can be implemented by them wherein positioning of the company can be changed and can open new outlets in the areas where they can attract customers and gain competitive advantage as well. The other change is proper diversification of products and services in the competitive market as to create proper customer base and can be a competition to the other markets in the competitive industry. Another critical aspect is providing proper motivation to the employees in the organization, as they are the ones who help in achieving goals and success for the entire organization by providing them both monetary as well as non-monetary benefits as this will increase the morale of the employees in the organization. The advancement in technologies has to be adopted by the respective company as it helps in analyzing the advancement in the competitive market and it will help them in gaining competitive market. PESTLE analysis According to the PESTLE analysis, on the political front there will be no such change required in the company as they are politically strong in nature and have good competitive advantage as well upon other companies. The economic factors has to be revised by the company as this will help in reaching the larger areas of the entire market and attract customers with proper advancement in technology and expand globally as well (Gupta and Mishra 2016). The social factors are desirable in nature for the company, however in order to improve the diversity of the company it is essential for the company to improve the market rate with proper usage of technology and resources and it will be helpful in generating success in the organization as well. Proper structured models has to be created by them as this will help in gaining advantage in the industry and create better models in the market as well. Lastly, there are presently some issues related to the legal structure of the company. Recommendations Therefore, it can be recommended that proper strategies need to be implemented by the company, as it will help in understanding the threats that are faced by the respective company from the new entrants in the market. The services related to ERP have to be analyzed in such a way that it will help in understanding the needs of the company and solve such issues accordingly. There are threats from substitutes that are challenging in nature for the company, as this will have impact on the brand image of the company. Lastly, the rivalry among the competitors is a challenge for the company as this will have huge impact on the growth of the company and affect the reputation of the company as well. Due to increase in the brands in the market, proper dynamic model has to be implemented by the company, as this will help in gaining advantage in the company. As per the system is concerned of the company, proper reporting system is essential, as this helps in measuring the productivity of the organization and it will lead to generate coordination among the employees and the customers in the competitive market. This will help in correcting and reducing the overlapping and duplication of the functions in the different departments in the organization. The skills that are required in the management team, proper training is essential as it will help in gaining success and it will help in developing ERP services that are essential to be successful in the competitive market as well. Lastly, the shared values are essential to be properly maintained by the company, as this will help in achieving objectives of the company and proper identification of the internal staffs are essential as this will help in providing benefit to the clients and the employees in the competitive market. Balanced Scorecard Model It is a quantifiable measure that is derived from the unique strategy of organization. The measures that are selected for the scorecard helps in representing tool that are used in communication with the employees as well as the outside stakeholders that will help in achieving strategic aims and objectives. Generally, a strategic as well as management tool helps the entire organization to work according to the mandates and helps in improving the external and internal process of communication. It helps in monitoring the performance against the goals related to the strategies. The model of Balanced Scorecard helps in understanding the four perspectives: Learning as well as growth wherein it helps the staff and the other employees in the organization about the mission and strategic goals of the company. XYZ Company is investing in service to the customers and development of goods and services. The particular perspective helps in retaining the staff and it will benefit the organization as well. The recommendations are providing proper development along with connecting the growth as well as development with the appraisal of annual performance. Business Process is through which the managers in the organization can get a close look at the processes of the organization that can provide safety to the stakeholders and satisfy their wants as well. Customers satisfaction is essential in nature as it helps in understanding the conflicts of the customers faced by them and this will help them in enhancing the issues by evaluating their needs and providing proper feedback as well. Financial data is essential in the business, as this will help in managing the data that is required in order to provide sustainability in the organization. Organizational structure (Before) Figure 1: Organizational structure (Source: Created by author) From the above diagram of the organizational structure, it can be analyzed that the enterprise structure of ERP in the company is working smoothly and this helps in understanding the client base as well as location of the storage of the organization (Frankenberger, Weiblen and Gassmann 2014). Proper focus has to be given to the sales department of the organization wherein legal entity along with accounting unit is not functioning properly and proper infrastructure is required as to generate proper profit in the company. The distribution of goods and services is not properly done by the company and is reducing the sales of the company. The sales have to be properly generated by the company as to negotiate the conditions of sale in the market as well (Baden-Fuller and Mangematin 2013). The distribution channels have to be properly set up by the company, as this will help in gaining competitive advantage. The distribution channels need to reach the different customers and the materials are delivered on time with implementation of ERP strategies. The company needs to distribute the goods and services to the customers in such a way that it helps the customer in understanding the ERP related strategies and can trade without any issue faced by them as well. However, there is little lack in the strategies that are to be applied by the company and it has to be rectified properly as well. Nazisim essays

Nazisim essays Throughout the years, decades and centuries of the worlds tragic history, there is one specific event that is crucial and substantial to the development and outcome of how society is today- the Holocaust and Nazi Germany. It is a widely known fact that Adolf Hitler started the Holocaust during World War II (In the 1930s); but why was it started; what were the reasons behind it; and most importantly, how was it started? These are all excellent questions although do not have logical answers. Thus far, Nazism is a hard concept to grasp. It is difficult to understand how one man can single-handedly overrule a nation and acquire the vast lands and deaths that he had. Looking back today, society realizes it was absurd, but back then, Hitler and the Nazis did have what they thought to be rational reasons to start the wave and lifestyle of Nazism. Even before the Holocaust, Nazism was on the rise. In summer of the 1920s, the Swastika was designed, by Hitler and quickly became the symbol of Jewish persecution (Gottfried 44). The Nazi Party, formally known as the German Workers Party, however was not successful at first. In the beginning, the Nazi Party was merely a small group of individuals who sought for power. When first started, the Nazi Party was a small fringe group that had campaigned unsuccessfully to win the factory working class away from socialism. (Overy 22) Hitler just as the former Nazi Party wanted to hold all of the power that he could. He was exactly the right man to lead this unorganized group. After Hitler became the Chancellor of Germany and he began going to the German Workers Partys meetings, he started to realize the state that Germany was in. With the Germany in severe depression, Hitler realized that the people of Germany would believe anyone and anything that was promising. Nazism was started. More and more people began to atten ...

Digital Intellectual Property Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 2

Digital Intellectual Property - Essay Example Digital intellectual property is a type of intellectual property, which is somewhat more technical and information technology oriented. Some of the most common digital intellectual property issues include plagiarism, reverse engineering, open source code, competitive intelligence, and cyber squatting. In this paper, we will discuss plagiarism, which is one of the most common digital intellectual property issues. Plagiarism In the simplest form, plagiarism means to use someone’s idea, conversation, writing, or any other thing without using the reference of that person. Plagiarism is not only associated with the act of copying someone’s written work or oral speeches without mentioning the source but also it is associated with all types of visual art works, music, and paintings. â€Å"A painting that is a direct copy of someone else’s work without permission is also plagiarism when the work is presented as one’s own† (Ellis-Christensen, n.d.). There ar e a number of ethical issues related to plagiarism, which make it one of the most common issues all over the world. â€Å"Plagiarism violates the law as well as individual moral codes† (Jorgensen, n.d.). ... 5). My personal point of view regarding the issue of plagiarism is that it is an act of copying and cheating which is totally against the creativity ethics. Rozakis (2007) states, â€Å"Plagiarism is a serious lapse in ethics as well as a cause for failure† (p. 118). Here, I would like to relate a personal experience in which my professor caught me for the act of plagiarism. My professor gave me an assignment in which I had to write a one-page paper on some topic of my interest. I wrote the paper on discrimination and submitted it to the professor. Unfortunately, the professor gave me no marks for the paper as he caught some plagiarism in that paper. Actually, I copied a couple of paragraphs from a website and tried to write them in my own words. My professor discouraged my act and asked me that I should have mentioned the source even for paraphrasing. Although I lost my marks in that assignment but I got some new information about plagiarism that one should not closely paraph rase two large paragraphs without mentioning the source. Some people say that paraphrasing is one of the ways to avoid plagiarism. However, if someone does paraphrasing of a small paragraph or a quotation, which is very close to the original version, it is also a form of plagiarism. â€Å"Paraphrasing someone else’s work too closely is another form of plagiarism† (Ellis-Christensen, n.d.). Plagiarism is cheating which cannot be tolerated in any case. Submitting someone else’s work as one’s own, doing close paraphrasing, not documenting the references properly, or copying personal work are such actions which do not find any base in the ethics of creative works. Some people use copyrighted work available on the internet

Case study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 94

Case Study Example Reason being; they possess the following advantages: they have unlimited access to information; agents on the ground; and direct contacts with factories. However, the sad thing is that importers have to incur the high costs of permits, shipments and inventory taking before selling. As a merchant/retailer, he will be able to get supplies from the local companies, brand them and even improve the quality of the products. Thereafter, she would sell them at higher prices both locally and internationally. However, the disadvantage associated with this is that there will be minimal control of exports; more companies will join the market; this will lead to enhanced policies and restrictions thus reducing profit margins.(The Chinese Fireworks Industry-Revised: page215 ) 2. The suitable point for jerry to enter into the industry is like a merchant. Because the Chinese products are of inferior quality compared to those from Japan and Korea, as a merchant he will obtain supplies from various local factories. Subsequently, brand them and improve on their quality (The Chinese Fireworks Industry-Revised: pg 219). He could then setup wholesale booths in the countryside. Thereafter, peddlers and other small-scale dealers would source the commodities from the market and sell in the surrounding communities. Consequently, he would avoid the low-profit margins as a manufacturer and brand identity loss. Given the reasonably good quality of Chinese product and cheapness, branding and better quality fuse replacement of the same products would render them at higher sale prices (The Chinese Fireworks Industry-Revised: pg

The Australian and American Free

The Australian and American Freedom Rides Essay This essay briefly discusses the similarities and differences of the ‘Australian and American Freedom Rides’ history. Throughout the essay, there is a discussion on what the reasons were for the protest of the Freedom Rides. It also points out the duration of the protest and the major locations where they were held. The essay also shows the different reactions to the protest and the influential behaviour it results in. The American Freedom Rides were motivated by the ‘Journey of Reconciliation’ in 1947, â€Å"led by civil rights activists Bayard Rustin and George Houser†1. The Freedom Rides in America involved riding a bus opposing the segregation of black and whites riding together in buses2. Racial segregation was made illegal after the Boynton v. Virginia case, especially in major public places such as â€Å"restaurants and waiting rooms in terminal serving buses that crossed state lines†3 . After the case, the Freedom Riders defied racial segregation by seeing whether the Boynton v. Virginia case law was followed. The Australian Freedom Rides were inspired by the Freedom Rides of the ‘African American Civil Rights Movement. ’ The reason for the Freedom Rides in Australia (as in America) was to protest against the cruel behaviour of white people towards black people who were living in country towns4. The Freedom Rides in Australia also involved riding a bus just like America, into New South Wales country towns and protesting in sections where Aboriginal people were rejected; such as being â€Å"often refused service in shops, made to stand aside while others were served, confined to their own section in cinemas, banned from clubs and pubs, and excluded from public swimming pools†5. The Freedom Rides in America consisted of riding into â€Å"segregated southern United States†6, it started off at Washington D. C. , on May 4, 1961 and planned to reach New Orleans on May 17, â€Å"but they never reached New Orleans†7. The Freedom Rides passed through Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi, finished with a gathering in New Orleans, Louisiana8. The duration of the American Freedom Rides occurred mainly in May 1961. Unlike in America, the Freedom Rides in Australia took place later on the 12th February 19659; when the University of Sydney students rode into the â€Å"towns in northern New South Wales which contained large Aboriginal populations†10. One of the main towns mentioned was at Moree; where they protested in swimming pools, attracting a lot of violence. The Freedom Rides also passed through Wellington, Gulargambone, Lismore, Bowraville and Kempsey. The duration of the Australian Freedom Rides occurred mainly in February 1965. In America, the reaction to the protest was very intense. Throughout the protest, the Freedom Riders came across violence and the reaction of the protest was ruthless. While having to delay their journey to change a slashed tire, â€Å"one bus was firebombed and the Freedom Riders were beaten (by a white mob). The second bus was similarly attacked and the passengers beaten†. 11 In America, there was a Freedom Ride accompanied by the State Highway Patrol, taking their journey headed for Montgomery; but when â€Å"local police failed to protect them, they were again beaten†12. Similar to America, the Freedom Rides in Australia â€Å"gained publicity when the students were set upon by angry crowds and placed under police protection†13. The students pressed into the entrance of the Moree swimming pool, at the same time a furious crowd â€Å"booed and catcalled†14. The dilemma continued after â€Å"27 young men and women from Sydney University tried to escort six Aboriginal children into the baths†15. This was one of the reactions of the Freedom Riders drew attention towards, the segregation at local swimming pools. Both the American and Australian Freedom Rides protested against the segregation of black and white people; along with racial discrimination that black people experienced. Both of the Freedom Rides took place around the 1960s which was a time of great social and cultural significance. Both of the Freedom Rides resulted with violent behaviour and the general public becoming aggressive. In conclusion, the Freedom Rides were a memorable event in history which argued that racial discrimination should be banned and everyone in society should be accepted.

Iago as Expert Manipulator in Shakespeares Othello Essay -- GCSE Cour

Iago as Expert Manipulator in Othello  Ã‚        Ã‚   In Othello, by William Shakespeare, the character of Iago cleverly and skillfully alters the appearance of reality within certain characters minds that are clouded by emotion. While Iago does deceive both Cassio and Roderigo, the most vulnerable character to Iago's treachery appears to be Othello. By being a good director and manipulator of emotions and intentions, Iago carries out his plan to exploit Othello's mental weakness almost flawlessly. Iago's ability to bend and sometimes replace the truth with his own lies drives the overall action of the play.    The characters most vulnerable to Iago's manipulation seem to be the ones that appear the most emotionally confused. Iago finds ways to alter these characters's perception of reality and pushes them to believe in a false reality created by Iago's own twisted mind. The emotions that Iago plays upon are that of love and jealousy, which Iago calls "the green eyed monster which doth mock / The meat it feeds on" (3.3.179-180). Roderigo and Cassio fall to Iago's treachery by one if not both of these emotions. However, Othello turns out to be the most vulnerable character to Iago's wickedness. Iago himself says that "I'll pour this pestilence into his ea... .... Othello. Directed by Oliver Parker with Laurence Fishburne and Kenneth Branagh. Energy Summary Essay

In this paper we explain some current environmental problems and how some people are looking for quick and temporary solutions without taking into consideration the environment. These solutions might be beneficial for the human existence in the present time or for a short period of time but the imminent destruction of the environment will be permanent due to the damage caused by the last generations, which are now seeing the consequences of the irresponsible way in which nature has been exploited. Today there are more laws, organizations, and measures to minimize or deny a holding that will favor some nations for a short time but forever destroy the environment without thinking about the next generations. In addition, we explain how United States is dealing with nuclear waste, the biggest threat to the environment; even small amounts can be extremely dangerous for the humanity. Here we will see how the location of these plants could be threatened by underground geography, and natural distastes as earthquakes. The arctic National Wildlife Refuge The arctic National Wildlife Refuge is home to thousands of species of animals and plants that are exclusive to the area. This refuge was created to protect these species from human development and interests because of how fragile the ecosystem is in this area. â€Å"The organisms living here have adapted to their environment, but any additional stress has the potential to harm or even kill them. Thus, arctic organisms are particularly vulnerable to human activities† (Raven, P. , Berg, L. & Hassenzahl, D. , 2010). The primary energy source in the area is crude oil. It has been said that the area contains enough oil to supply our nation’s needs for approximately a decade, which would temporarily reduce the nations need for dependence on foreign oil. The oil reserves that have been found in Alaska are some of the largest reserves that have been found in our nation, which helps continue to fuel the discussion for drilling to begin. The o ther argument for drilling is the need to reduce dependency on foreign oil. The economic impact that drilling these oil reserves would be huge, but it would be temporary. The money spent each year on foreign oil would be reduced and utilized for other needs of the nation, but once that oil is gone and used up the nation would be back in the same position it was currently facing. The stakeholders in this case are the animal and plant species native to the area, as well as the businessmen in the oil industry and the consumers. Advocates for conserving the area will stress for the need to keep the area untouched for the sake of the life forms there. The businessmen and the consumer will continue to advocate for the drilling of this land as long as fuel prices remain high, and as long as the nation’s dependence on foreign oil remains so substantial. There are numerous solutions that can be found to the oil problem, but none of them are cheap. Technology exists today for vehicles and businesses to run on natural gas, solar power, and even bio-diesel. These technologies are safer on the environment as well as safer for the health of the consumer. Big business leaders resist these technologies because it will cut into the profits they already make off of the oil industry. The Yucca Mountains The Yucca Mountains, which are located roughly 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas has been identified as a location to store nuclear waste by the US government (Raven, P. , Berg, L. , & Hassenzahl, D. , 2010). In 1954 the government made the decision to be responsible in the disposal of high level nuclear waste. The first of the actions taken by the US government involved storing nuclear waste in the salts beds near Carlsbad, New Mexico (Raven, P. , Berg, L. , & Hassenzahl, D. , 2010). At this time although the Yucca Mountains has been chosen as a location to store the waste, the actual disposal process has not yet started. There is discussion and observations of nuclear power and its impact on the environment. Nuclear waste is a result of nuclear power releasing amounts of ionizing radiation in the atmosphere. Looking at the current economics the supply of nuclear power is guessed to last 100+ years leading to the planning of waste disposal as long as it is used. Experiments show that the waste level is lower than other energy sources but has extreme concerns of risk from catastrophic accident which include water pollution and long term health issues when exposed. Take for example the Chernobyl Accident of 1986 where a plant explosion and fires released at up to 5% of the radioactive reactor core in to the atmosphere and downwind, (â€Å"Chernobyl Accident 1986†, 2012). As a result of the accident there were fatalities and injuries and now showing cases of illness due to exposure. With the governments interest in taking responsibility in the disposal of nuclear waste using the Yucca Mountains has convinced them that the location is the right place. But before it can be executed there is more testing and experiments that are being conducted. There is still much work to in order before execution of the disposal plan. The remote profile of the location makes for a good place. Billions of dollars have been spent by the government conducting feasibility of the area (Raven, P. , Berg, L. , & Hassenzahl, D. , 2010). There is a delay in the planning to use the mountains because there is an argument that regardless of the remoteness it is still near an area where earthquake and volcanic actions can still occur. Monitoring continues and the government over-see’s the expenses as part of their interest and responsibility to the environment. As researchers continue explore the study of nuclear power and its waste the limited resources remain around this topic. Carlsbad had offered to dispose some of the waste but the Yucca remains to be a target. With Nevada’s best interest at hand the delay to deposit the waste may have been an indirect positive benefit right now. As an alternative strategy the as Nevada and the government try to come to an agreement suggestions of alternatives should and must be discussed. Looking at a short term solution the nuclear waste maybe disposed in substitute locations. Another strategy to act in assistance to the concern might be to limit nuclear waste until other arrangements can be put in place by the government and participating businesses. The Three Gorge Dam The Three Gorge Dam, located on the Yangtze River (is the third largest river in the world) in China, is the world’s largest hydropower project. The dam supplies water to the hydroelectric plant. Advantages of the dam include helping control the downstream flooding and waterway navigation purposes. River navigation is the only means of long-distance, cost-effective transportation of freight. (â€Å"Three Gorges Dam†, n. d. ). The Three Gorge Dam project has a great abundance of water currently available but the environmental impact is great. Environmental impact includes soil erosions, industrial water pollutants, loss of ecosystems, endangering species (biodiversity), disruption of local species habitat (fish migration) and siltation. (Min, n. d. ). Hundreds of factories, mines, and waste dumps were submerged creating industrial pollutants in the reservoir. Erosion from the downstream riverbanks causes landslides and changing ecosystems. Pristine and biologically diverse river basins are being used for the construction of hydropower. Another environmental concern is the actual weight of the reservoirs water increasing seismicity. Economical and ethical issues include the project funding, the relocation of more than 1. 2 million people (to more inland urban cities), agricultural shifts, and the flooding of numerous cities, villages, and towns. (â€Å"Three Gorges Dam, China†, 2009). Vital farmlands would be submerged (along with million dollar metal mines) and the lack of replenishing land will affect the countries agriculture prices. Additionally the reservoir would trap over 75% of the sedimentation (â€Å"natural fertilizer† for the downstream Delta). Relocating over one million people is an incredibly difficult task. The Chinese government is solely interested in this project to produce more efficient power for the country (generating 84 billion kilowatt/hour (kW/h) of hydroelectric power each year). That is equivalent to 18 nuclear power plants or large coal power plants. Given the severe air quality problems facing China and its current reliance on imported energy, this is a great advantage. Possible strategies for creating alternative energy sources are limited. Solar energy is a great way, but China does not have much ground space for solar systems. Conservation is weighed on both sides of the argument. To preserve the existing land, ecosystems, and waterways would be the best choice in conservation. But, hydroelectric power is cheaper than fossil fuel power. And since the dam in already in place, it is time to conserve for future species and their offspring. Ongoing studies of critically endangered species should be of primary concern. Also, conserving the rest of Chinas agricultural land is important, since a percentage was lost creating the dam. Conclusion Even though many countries around the word are looking for new sustainable energy solutions, trying very hard to minimize the impact on the environment, the leading energy companies are still not willing to make the necessary investments. These companies should receive the proper incentive and political support to start investing in our energy future. In the last few years the â€Å"go green† culture is getting stronger and is attracting more followers every single day. There are government programs incenting the purchase of energy efficient cars, home electronics or green homes. Only a hand full of countries are willing to see this problem as a priority and it will take more time and damage to the environment until the entire world will come to the same realization. Hopefully, in the near future clean and sustainable energy will be the norm and the damage to the environment will be stopped or at list minimized.

Kropotkin

Russian main proponent of anarchist communism, Kropotkin (1842–1921)  believed that Darwin’s theory of evolution, properly applied, showed that human beings are social creatures who flourish best in small communities cemented together by mutual aid and voluntary associations. A guiding spirit of the international anarchist movement, Kropotkin was also a distinguished geographer, a scientist and a positivist. He was a geographer who carried out explorations of Siberia, Finland, and Manchuria before devoting his life to political activities. Kropotkin was a Russian aristocrat by birth but he renounced his title 1872 and henceforth devoted himself to the cause of social revolution, spending most of his later life in Western Europe and Britain. Memoirs of a Revolutionist is the work in which Kropotkin summarized his ideas. This entertaining and candid autobiography of the great anarchist is highly impressive. There are fantastic characters – the millionaire gourmet prince who ate away a fortune; thrilling adventures – escape from the Peter and Paul prison, Petersburg’s Bastille; amusing ironies on the run, as when he gets a job in London on Nature under an assumed name and is asked to review his own books. Lenin thought Kropotkin a worthy bore. Kropotkin regarded Lenin as an honorable tyrant. The main issue touched upon by the memoirs is the analysis of correlation between Darwinism and â€Å"the progressive evolution† of human society[1]. Memoirs of a Revolutionist helps track the life journey made by Kropotkin before his formulated his ideas. Born into an aristocratic Moscow family close to the Russian Imperial throne, Kropotkin was educated at an exclusive military academy, but at 20, filled with the desire to be useful, he renounced a brilliant career to serve for five years as a military administrator in Eastern Siberia. His hopes for liberal reform by Alexander II, the tsar who had abolished serfdom, were soon disappointed. He also lost any faith in the virtues of state discipline in society and began to move slowly towards an anarchist position. He now turned to scientific exploration of the nature, and his observations laid the foundations of his theory of â€Å"mutual aid†[2] among animal species. Anarchism, as advanced by Peter Kropotkin, was equally prepared to recognize the profound influence of Darwinism on modern thought. Darwin, Kropotkin argued, made biology an advanced science by giving it an evolutionary principle of universal magnitude. Darwin’s theory, in his opinion, provided a key for reconstructing â€Å"the progressive evolution† not only of plants and animals but also of human society as a scientific challenge. Kropotkin did not deny the role of the struggle for existence in the evolutionary process, but he bitterly opposed Darwin’s designation of that struggle as the primary motor of biological transformation. Kropotkin gave credit to The Descent of Man, one of Darwin’s major works, for demonstrating the biological origins of morality, the foundation of â€Å"mutual aid†. Kropotkin’s ideas have clear positivist coat. He saw the development of anarchism as one aspect of the whole movement of modern science towards an integrated philosophy. He believed that the dominant phenomenon in nature was harmony, arrived at by a continuous process of adjustment between contending forces. In human, as in animal societies, the dominant phenomenon was mutual aid: thus once metaphysics, law and state authority had been shaken off, harmony could be realized. Developing his idea of â€Å"mutual aid† Kropotkin comes to a fair, as he believes, society, that is anarchist communism. It is a society without government, where harmony would be obtained not by submission to law, or by obedience to any authority, but by free agreements between the various groups, territorial and professional, instituted for the sake of production and consumption as also for the satisfaction of the infinite variety of needs and aspirations of a civilized society. In such a society, as in organic life, Kropotkin believed harmony would result from â€Å"an ever-changing adjustment and readjustment of equilibrium between a multitude of forces and influences†[3]. The individual would not be limited in the free expression of his powers in production by a capitalist monopoly, or by obedience, which only led to the sapping of initiative. On the contrary, he would be able to obtain the complete development of all his faculties: the fullest individuation. Works Cited Kropotkin, P.   Memoirs of a Revolutionist. Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation

Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Introduction Alcohol and drug abuse is one of the major health and social challenges faced by a number of European countries such as United Kingdom and the United States of America. Prolonged use of drugs and alcohol usually results into drug addiction, which has severe effects on the health of the drug user. For instance, drug addicts often suffer from intense and irrepressible craving for drugs despite the repercussions.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Most of the European countries like UK and America have adopted health policies intended to reduce drug abuse and achieve harm reduction. Harm reduction involves lessening the risks associated with using contaminated drug injection equipment. This paper examines some of the approaches adopted by the European nations and USA government in an attempt to reduce drug and alcohol abuse. Some of the initiativ es include needle exchange and methadone maintenance. Needle Exchange The needle exchange program is an initiative that aims at reducing the harm associated with sharing needles and syringes among injection drug users (IDUs) whereby the IDUs get a chance to acquire hypodermic needles, as well as, injection equipment at a subsidized cost or free of charge. In some instances, the injection drug users are usually required to submit used needles to acquire an equivalent amount of new injection equipment. The needle exchange program also aims at reducing the rate of improper disposal of used drug injection equipment. Other services and materials provided by the needle exchange program include HIV and Hepatitis C testing, guidance and counseling, needle containers, and alcohol swabs. Proponents of harm reduction â€Å"believe that the needle exchange program provides a social benefit in reducing health costs†. For instance, the needle and syringe exchange program has helped to redu ce the rate of HIV infection among the injection drug users in the UK, which is the pioneer of needle and syringe exchange program. Through the exchange programs, nurses are able to share information with the IDUs about HIV infection, thereby helping to prevent physical transmission of HIV. The realization of positive results in the use of needle exchange has promoted its spread to other European countries.Advertising Looking for essay on health medicine? Let's see if we can help you! Despite the benefits associated with needle exchange programs, there are also critics who have given various opposing opinions. For instance, opponents of the needle exchange program view the initiative as a waste of money because it promotes the use of drugs at t he expense of spreading the massage of drug abstinence. Additionally, the critics believe that the needle exchange initiative promotes drug dealings because the IDUs get a chance to acquire extra injection equipment, which they can sell and use the income to purchase more drugs. Therefore, as much as the needle exchange program helps in reducing the risks associated with sharing drug injection needles, it also promotes continuous use of the drugs, thereby posing more challenge to the fight against drug abuse. Methadone Maintenance Whereas the needle exchange programs aim at harm reduction among the IDUs, methadone maintenance enables the IDUs to reduce the use of drugs or totally recover from drug injection practices. â€Å"Methadone is a synthetic agent that works by occupying the brain receptor sites affected by heroine and other opiates† (CDC, 2002). For example, methadone enables IDUs to have lesser craving for opiates, reduce withdrawal symptoms, and enables the IDUs to function normally. Individuals are supposed to take a dose of methadone on a daily basis. In most countries like UK, methadone is usually administered in the dispensing clinics to ensure that the victims take the right dose and to prevent re-sale of the prescribed methadone dose to other addicts. Once an individual has taken the methadone, the drug is â€Å"widely distributed to body tissues where it is stored and then released into the plasma, thereby stabilizing the patient†.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This approach is beneficial in a number of ways to both the user and the society. Methadone maintenance treatment enables the drug addicts to reduce the use of drug injections or completely discontinue using drug injections (CDC, 2004). It also protects the addicts of opiates from infections like HIV, Hepatitis B, and sexually transmitted i nfections. Additionally, methadone maintenance helps to reduce criminal activities and mortality rate among the opiate addicts. Through several studies, methadone has also been proved to be cost effective. Despite the positive results of methadone maintenance, the approach has remained a controversial subject in America and Europe. Most of the opponents believe that methadone is a substitute for opiate addiction; hence, it does not achieve the ultimate goal of eliminating drug addiction (CDC, 2002). Most of the patients who undergo methadone treatment have also shown continued use of opiates because of several reasons such as lack of self-control over addiction, compromising situations, and personal reasons. Critics of methadone maintenance also argue that the approach may promote criminal activities and drug dealings in the society. For example, patients who are under methadone maintenance may sell the drug to other addicts to earn some income (CDC, 2002). Therefore, a number of pe ople in America and Europe are pessimistic about methadone maintenance as a way of dealing with drug addiction. The approach also encourages drug addicts to remain dependent on the drug for years. Unfortunately, some of the addicts usually fail to recover from drug addiction because they supplement the dependency on methadone with other drugs and alcohol. Additionally, some patients may shy away from undergoing methadone treatment due to the strict procedure that an individual has to go through. Some of the patients also fail to visit the methadone clinics on a daily basis in order to get treatment due long distance from their residence.Advertising Looking for essay on health medicine? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Similarly, a number of people may avoid undergoing the treatment because of stigmatization associated with clinic environment, which may lead to low self-esteem. Conclusion From the above discussion, it can be concluded that programs like needle exchange and methadone maintenance that a number of European nations and America have adopted in an attempt to fight drug abuse are only beneficial to some extent. For example, the needle exchange program helps to reduce the risks associated with drug injection. On the other hand, methadone maintenance helps to stabilize patients of opiate in order to function normally. However, these approaches also have a number of side effects. For instance, patients of methadone maintenance often remain dependant on the drug to avoid withdrawal symptoms. Similarly, needle exchange may encourage the IDUs to remain dependant on the state for supply of the drug injection equipment. Therefore, the ultimate goal of realizing a drug free state may not be fully achieved through these approaches because the programs reinforce the use of drugs. References Campopiano, M. (2010). Ethics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words - 10

Ethics - Essay Example Therefore, it is by nature that virtues arise in human beings as human beings are adapted by nature to get them and are made naturally by nature. In nature, human beings acquire the potential and later exhibit the activity. On the other hand, we had the sense of hearing seeing and smelling before we used them, but these virtues are acquired by exercise and practice. For the things that we have to learn before they are done, one must practice good deeds in order to be good. Virtue is a quality of character and is expressed by how a person behaves. Virtue can be taught only if it is the knowledge of something. Virtue is a good value. Anybody possessing something of good character can only benefit from it rather than acquire it. Therefore, any quality of virtue not guided by understanding can be harmful and of no use to anybody. For example, a person’s beauty can harm him or her physically if the beauty is used foolishly; it is of no benefit to that person. Virtue being a quality of character benefits the person who possesses it and it can be argued that knowledge is part of virtue. In accordance with age, children do not act out of virtue as compared to adults and this explains further that virtue does not emerge from that part of our character rather than nature itself. Knowledge therefore, is not a natural innate but is an acquired trait. Those who acquire virtue get it from learning and exercising its values. If virtue can be acquired by learning, then people can be taught virtue by trained professionals. Sophists ar e teachers of virtue who teach arts of persuasions and rhetoric and on the other hand, they are not concerned with the result of what they teach regardless of the skills. People who are virtuous such as elders are best skilled and experienced to teach virtue to others by examples, advice, and explanations as they were taught by other elders during their time. These

Cultural Diversity in the Nursing Profession Essay

Cultural Diversity in the Nursing Profession - Essay Example There has been in fact a rising practice of what has been termed as "medical tourism" because of the rise in number of people getting more health conscious, seeking alternative ways of improving one's health. The American Nursing Association (ANA) recognizes the vital role knowledge on cultural diversity plays at all levels of nursing practice. When dealing with patients, nurses involve themselves in an interaction of 3 cultural systems: (1) the culture of the nurse; (2) the culture of the client; (3) the culture of the setting. This happens because the nursing profession has gone global, involving health care delivery by people of varied nationality and various cultures (ANA, 1991). With the growing global population composed of multi-cultural oriented people, an ethnocentric approach to nursing practice is no longer advisable. Ethnocentrism is the belief that one's own culture is superior to all others. This belief is common to all cultural groups; all groups regard their own culture as not only the best but also the correct, moral, and only way of life (ANA, 1991). Thus, it is important for nurses to understand various cultures as part of their training. ... e 2008 Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life survey on religious landscape of the United States shows that religious affiliation of the people in the US "are very diverse and fluid" (Pew Forum, 2008). This has significant implication on the nursing profession with religion as a vital component of culture. There are various religious groups around the world. Of particular interest is the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) in the Philippines which comprise almost 3% of the total population (NSO, 1990). Founded in 1914 by Felix Manalo, INC considers itself the "true" Filipino church (Harper, 2001). Among the doctrines it preaches to its members are: (a) there is only one God (as opposed to Christianity's Trinitarian view) and that Jesus Christ is a created being; (b) salvation is dependent on church membership, baptism and works; (c) its founder, Felix Manalo, is regarded as the "angel from the East" (mentioned in Revelation 7) sent by God bringing the final message. From only four ministers and 12 disciples when it was founded on the eve of the World War I, membership grew steadily and by the 1950s, the church was recruiting from 10,000 to 15,000 converts a year. The 1990 Census of Population and Housing places the number of Iglesia members at 1.4 million, three times more than its membership in 1970 (Mangahas, 2002). The INC has members among overseas Filipinos as well and says it has churches in 66 countries, including 39 in the United States, 23 in Asia, 15 in Europe, 11 in Australia and Oceania, and eight in Africa (Mangahas and Olarte, 2002). Over the years, the INC's business interests have grown. A search at the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission showed that INC leaders are incorporators and board directors in companies engaged in education; medical care,

Project - Essay Example The first component of the theory segment in this experiment will entail the isolation of a container beyond the precints of heat or errors prone to affect the experimental outcome. Another important parameter for measurement will be the can’s and containers specific heat capacity. This is moreso because it aid in slow or steady increase or decrease of temperature. Evidently, transfer of thermal energy between two objects is only feasible when they are at different temperatures. The experiment herein will investigate the thermal energy of a solid (ice) to liquid (water) state. In this regard, thermal energy will be lost by the ice and gained by the water. The design and construction of the calorimeter entails a can and container. There is a space between the can and container that functions as a heat insulator. Consequently, minimal exchange of heat occurs between the can and container. Furthermore, a digital thermometer is used in determining the liquids temperature within the container. In the middle of the container, a can is placed with ice in it. To aid in the equal distribution of heat throughout the vessel, a stirrer will be used in stirring the liquid. Laces are equally useful holding up the inner vessel suspended within the center of the outer container. A plastic lid or cover with holes is used in attaching the thermometer and stirring rod. The device used in the experiment for taking measurements of the energy changes within a system that is either physical or chemical in nature is known as a calorimà ¨tre. During the experiment, temperature recordings of the water inside the calorimeter were taken as the ice was melting. In this regard, measurements were conducted at intervals of every 30 seconds. Two trails of the experiment were conducted. Prior to recording the water temperatures, the stirrer was used in stirring the water for
